Lahore merely means Loh-Awar, a fort as strong as iron. The Lahore Fort has 13 gates. Lahore rose to its importance during Ghazanavid period. It was developed and enlarged under Ayaz, the favorite of Mahmud. Ayaz was for several years the Governor of Lahore and lies buried there.
